The Schwarzman Scholars Program was established to prepare the next generation of global leaders for a world in which China plays a central role. It offers a fully funded one-year Master of Management degree at Tsinghua University, one of China’s most prestigious institutions. The program emphasizes leadership, global awareness, and cross-cultural understanding, with a curriculum that combines coursework, mentorship, travel, and experiential learning.

Each year, the program selects a small cohort of outstanding scholars from the U.S. and around the world, as well as a separate cohort for applicants with Chinese citizenship.

U.S. and Global Applicants

Important: Late applications will not be accepted under any circumstances, even in cases of technical issues or last-minute emergencies. Plan to submit well ahead of the deadline.

Eligibility Requirements

General Eligibility

Schwarzman Scholars targets young, driven individuals who have demonstrated leadership potential and a desire to make a difference in the world. To be eligible for the 2027–2028 cycle:

• You must be between 18 and 29 years old at the time of program commencement
• You must have a completed undergraduate degree conferred by August 1, 2027
• You must submit your application in English
• All application materials must be submitted electronically, no mail or email submissions are accepted

Citizenship Requirements for U.S./Global Applicants

U.S. and Global applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a regular or ordinary passport from a country other than China. Special requirements apply in the following situations:

If you were born in China and later naturalized as a foreign citizen:

• You must have held a valid foreign passport or nationality document on or before April 30, 2021
• If you obtained a non-Chinese passport after that date, you are not eligible to apply as a U.S./Global applicant

If one or both of your parents were Chinese citizens at the time of your birth (even if you were born outside China):

Due to PRC regulations, one of the following must apply at the time of enrollment at Tsinghua University:

• Each parent who held Chinese citizenship at your birth must have also held a valid permanent residence permit or foreign nationality in the country where you were born at that time, and you must be able to provide this documentation
• You must be able to provide documented proof that you have renounced Chinese nationality, along with a certificate confirming the cancellation of your Chinese household registration (hukou)

How to Start Your Application

The entire application is completed online. Here is how to get started:

• Visit the official Schwarzman Scholars website and create a new account using your email address
• A system-generated email will be sent to you with a temporary PIN to activate your account
• Check your spam or junk folder if you do not receive the email immediately
• Add admissions@schwarzmanscholars.org to your safe senders list
• Once your account is activated, click “Start New Application” to begin

You do not need to complete the application in a single session. You can save your progress by clicking the “Continue” button and return as many times as needed before the final submission deadline.

Application Sections:

The Schwarzman Scholars application is thorough and covers multiple aspects of your academic background, leadership experience, and personal profile. Here is a detailed walkthrough of each section.

1. Personal Information

This section collects your biographical and contact details. You must provide:

• Your legal name exactly as it appears on your passport
• Your nationality, gender, place of birth, and date of birth
• Your current address, phone number, and primary native language

You may begin the application without a passport, but you are strongly encouraged to have one before submitting, as a valid passport is required for admitted candidates. If you hold dual nationalities, the passport you list in the application must match the citizenship you will use to apply for a student visa to China.

Critical note: If you are admitted and attempt to use a passport from a different country than the one listed in your application for your Chinese visa, you will be ineligible to enroll. Schwarzman Scholars cannot assist applicants in obtaining a valid passport.

2. Education

This section covers your undergraduate and graduate academic history. A few important rules:

• List only undergraduate and graduate degrees that you have completed or are on track to complete at the time of application
• Do not list certificate programs, short-term study, or study abroad programs that did not result in a degree — these can be included in your Resume/CV instead

Finding your institution: Search for your university by its English name (or local language in some cases). For more precise results, use the full official name in double quotation marks. If your institution does not appear in the search results, type the name manually and press Enter to input location details.

Grade Point Average (GPA):

• If your institution uses a numerical grading system, enter your cumulative GPA exactly as printed on your transcript
• This should reflect your entire program of study, not just your major
• If your institution does not use a numerical system, enter zero and describe your result in the “Degree Designation” field (for example, “First Class Honours”)
• You may add context about your academic performance in the Additional Information section of the application

Transcripts:

You must upload a transcript for each undergraduate and graduate degree. Every transcript must include:

• Your full name
• The institution name
• The degree conferred and conferral date (if applicable)

Additional transcript rules:

• If you studied abroad and those credits are not included in your main degree transcript, you must also upload the study abroad transcript
• If you transferred from another institution, provide a transcript from that institution or ensure those credits appear in your main transcript
• Currently enrolled applicants should upload the most up-to-date transcript available at the time of submission
• Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a full and accurate English translation — either from the institution’s registrar’s office or from a certified professional translation service
• Ensure your transcript file is not password-protected, inaccessible files will result in an incomplete application that will not be reviewed

3. About Me

This section gives the admissions committee a window into who you are as a leader and an individual. It includes:

Biographical Profile (100 words, required): Write a third-person summary of your leadership accomplishments and future aspirations. End with your country of citizenship. This profile will appear on the Schwarzman Scholars website if you are admitted, so write it carefully. It cannot be edited after submission. Review profiles of current and past scholars on the official website for reference.

Resume/CV (2-page maximum): Upload your most recent resume or CV, highlighting leadership experiences, professional accomplishments, educational background, and anything else you want the committee to know that is not covered elsewhere in the application.

Video Introduction (optional but highly recommended): Record a one-minute video introduction and upload it to YouTube or Vimeo as an unlisted (not password-protected) link. Follow the specific instructions provided in the application.

Interests: Select up to two interests that reflect your professional and leadership aspirations.

Reapplicant Information: If you have applied to Schwarzman Scholars before, briefly describe how your leadership has developed and what has changed in your application since your last attempt. Leave this blank if this is your first application.

4. Language Skills

List up to three languages (in addition to your native language) and indicate your proficiency level for each.

English Proficiency: This requirement may be waived if you studied in an English-speaking program at a post-secondary institution for at least two years. Otherwise, you must report scores from one of the following approved English proficiency tests:

Note that some English proficiency exams are only valid for two years from the test date.

5. Leadership Roles

This is one of the most important sections of the application. You may list up to five leadership roles that demonstrate your leadership trajectory.

For each role, provide:

• The name and description of the role
• Why the role is significant to your leadership profile
• Your distinct contributions, outcomes, or initiatives

These entries are displayed in reverse chronological order by start date. Choose roles that tell a compelling, cohesive story about your growth as a leader.

6. Awards and Recognition

List up to five awards, scholarships, recognitions, or publications that highlight your achievements and demonstrate distinction in your field or community.

As with leadership roles, for each entry explain why it is significant and what your specific contribution or achievement was. These are also displayed by most recent start date.

7. Professional Experience

List up to two full-time work experiences (post-bachelor’s degree). Keep in mind:

• If you are a student with no full-time employment, this section is not required, the absence of full-time work experience does not count against you
• Military experience (including military student, active duty, or veteran) may be included here
• Do not list part-time jobs, internships, or volunteer work, those belong in your Resume/CV
• For remote or multi-location work, list the location where you spent the majority of your time

For each experience, provide a brief description of the role and your most notable accomplishment, and select the category that best fits (Business, Government, Non-Profit, Military, etc.).

8. Essays

The essays are among the most critical components of the entire application. Every applicant must submit:

Two Required Essays:

• Leadership Essay — up to 750 words
• Statement of Purpose — up to 500 words

Two Short Answer Responses:

• Each has a strict 100-word limit

Important essay rules:

• Word counts are strictly enforced, essays that exceed the limits may be disqualified
• Footnotes, headers, and titles count toward the word count
• Essays must be uploaded as a PDF or Word document
• All essays must be your own original work, AI-generated content (such as content created using ChatGPT or similar tools) is not permitted and must be certified against at the time of submission

The essays are designed to help the selection committee understand your leadership abilities, analytical thinking, writing skills, and personal motivations. 9. Recommendations

You must register three recommenders by providing their name, professional title, and contact details. Once submitted, a system-generated recommendation request email with a unique submission link is automatically sent to each recommender.

Who should your recommenders be?

• People who know you well and can speak to your intellectual abilities, personal qualities, and demonstrated leadership with specific examples
• Recommenders must have worked directly with you
• Family members or relatives cannot serve as recommenders

Managing your recommenders:

• You can send reminders through the application system, recommenders should also check their spam folders
• In extenuating circumstances, you may exclude and replace a recommender through the application system
• You may also reinstate a previously removed recommender if needed
• You are responsible for informing your recommenders of any changes to their status

You can submit your application before all recommendation letters are received. After submission, you can monitor the status of each letter through the Status Page.

10. Disciplinary Action

Answer all four questions in this section honestly. Disclose any academic or criminal disciplinary action on your record and provide a clear explanation. Transparency is essential, inaccuracies discovered later may result in disqualification or removal from the program.

11. Additional Information

This section allows you to provide important context that does not fit elsewhere:

Anticipated Interview Location: In-person interviews are scheduled for:

• October 28 and 29, 2026 — London
• November 4 and 5, 2026 — New York

Indicate where you will be during that period so the committee can assign you the most suitable interview date and location.

Clarification Comment: Use this space to explain any unusual circumstances in your academic or professional background, leaves of absence, disruptions to your education, limited access to leadership opportunities, or anything else the committee should know.

Military Service: If you currently serve or have previously served in the military, select the appropriate description. If this does not apply to you, select “I am not currently serving and have never served in the military.”

12. Signature and Submission

Before submitting, you must electronically certify that:

• All information provided in the application is complete and accurate
• All essays are entirely your own work
• No AI-generation tools were used to create any part of your application

Your electronic signature is your full legal name typed into the required field. Once you submit, your application is final and cannot be edited.

13. After Submission: Your Status Page

Once submitted, you can access your Status Page to:

• Review your submitted materials
• Update your email address or mailing address
• Monitor the status of your recommendation letters (the checklist may take up to 20 minutes to update)
• Download a PDF version of your submitted application by clicking “Preview Application Proof”
