AMBER Postdoctoral Fellowship (Funded by EU Marie Skłodowska-Curie (MSCA) COFUND scheme)

If you are a postdoctoral researcher working in biological or biomedical imaging, the AMBER postdoctoral fellowship has just opened its final and most anticipated call. Funded through the EU’s Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions (MSCA) COFUND scheme, AMBER offers three year postdoc contracts at some of Europe’s most advanced research infrastructures, including MAX IV, the European Spallation Source, EMBL, and the Institut Laue Langevin.

This call opened on 1 June 2026 and closes on 24 August 2026 at 23:59 CET. Around eight postdoctoral positions will be recruited across Sweden and France in this round, each lasting 36 months.

What Is the AMBER Programme:

AMBER stands for Advanced Multiscale Biological imaging with European Research infrastructures. It is a five year programme designed to give postdoctoral researchers access to large scale European facilities for studying biology at every level, from molecules to whole organisms.

Over its lifetime, AMBER will recruit 47 postdoc fellows across at least three call rounds. Of these, 42 positions are co-funded by the EU and five by UKRI. The programme is coordinated by LINXS, the Institute of Advanced Neutron and X-ray Science, and brings together seven core partner institutions.

European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Grenoble, France

• PRISM, a platform for robotic imaging and synchrotron microscopy, led by Gergely Papp, Andrew McCarthy and Kristina Djinovic-Carugo
• Development of AI assisted sample optimisation workflows for cryo-EM, led by Gergely Papp and Kristina Djinovic-Carugo
• Next generation vitrification workflows for cryo-ET, enabling high throughput cryo-imaging across the microbial tree of life, led by Florian Wollweber

Salary and Research Funding

AMBER fellowships come with a competitive package designed to reflect the true cost of living and researching in each host country.

• Average salary contribution: €6,102 per month, including taxes and employer social security contributions
• Gross salary range: approximately €4,200 to €9,300 per month, depending on country and employer costs
• Average monthly research costs: €400 to €600, covering project related expenses

Who Can Apply: Eligibility Criteria

AMBER follows the standard MSCA mobility and eligibility rules. Before applying, make sure you meet all of the following conditions.

• You must not have resided or carried out your main activity, such as work or study, in the country hosting the position for more than 12 months during the three years immediately before the call deadline, unless this was due to a Geneva Convention refugee procedure
• You must hold a PhD at the time of the application deadline, or have successfully defended your doctoral thesis even if the degree has not yet been formally awarded
• You must have no more than eight years of research experience since the date your PhD was awarded
• You must have at least one original publication accepted in a peer reviewed journal by the call deadline
• You must be available to start employment at or near the announced position start date

Documents You Will Need to Apply:

Applications must be submitted in English, in PDF format, through the AMBER portal. Incomplete applications will not be considered, so it is worth preparing everything in advance.

• A Curriculum Vitae in Europass format, exported as a PDF
• A detailed research plan of no more than three pages, including any proposed secondments, planned schools or conferences, and a budget plan, plus a one page summary or abstract
• A letter of commitment from any additional secondment partners you wish to bring on board
• Evidence of English proficiency, minimum CEFR B2, which will also be checked at interview
• A draft Individual Career Development Plan
• Two reference letters
• Any additional supporting documents such as a cover letter, diplomas, certificates and your PhD certificate
