Humboldt Research Fellowship (Postdoctoral Research in Germany)

The Humboldt Research Fellowship is one of the most prestigious funding opportunities available to postdoctoral and experienced researchers from anywhere in the world who wish to carry out an extended research stay in Germany. Offered by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, this fellowship supports scholars across every academic discipline and every country, with no quotas limiting who can be selected. If you are looking for fully funded research opportunities in Germany, this programme deserves a close look.

Below, we break down everything you need to know about eligibility, funding, required documents, deadlines, and how the selection process actually works. For more BS, MS,PhdPostdoc Positions visit here.

What Is the Humboldt Research Fellowship:

The Humboldt Research Fellowship allows highly qualified scientists and scholars from outside Germany to spend an extended period conducting independent research at a German institution of their choosing. Applicants select their own topic of research and their own academic host, which means the fellowship is built around the researcher’s individual project rather than a fixed institutional agenda.

The programme runs under two separate tracks depending on career stage.

Postdoctoral Researchers

This track is designed for scholars who completed their doctorate within the last four years, or who are close to completing it and can already provide a written summary of their findings. Applicants must have a publication record in journals or with publishing houses that follow internationally recognised review standards.

Experienced Researchers

This track is for scholars who completed their doctorate within the last twelve years and who already hold a leadership position appropriate to their career stage, such as an assistant professorship, a lectureship, or the head of an independent research group. Experienced researcher applicants must also demonstrate a clearly defined, independent academic profile supported by publications on which they acted as thematic lead.

If a doctorate is uncommon or not offered in a candidate’s field or home country, an application can still be submitted up to sixteen years after completing a master’s degree or equivalent, provided the publication record matches the expected career stage.

Funding and Benefits You Will Receive:

The fellowship amount depends on which track you apply under.

Postdoctoral researchers receive a monthly fellowship rate of 3,000 euros, while experienced researchers receive 3,600 euros per month. Both figures come with a wide package of additional support, including:

  • A mobility allowance
  • A subsidy toward medical and liability insurance
  • A lump sum travel allowance
  • An initial settling in subsidy
  • A free intensive German language course before the fellowship begins, available to accompanying partners as well
  • A family allowance for accompanying partners and children under eighteen who stay in Germany for at least three months
  • Optional extensions for fellows accompanied by children or for a maternity period
  • Additional support options for fellows with disabilities or chronic illnesses

Fellowships can last between six and twenty four months for postdocs, and between six and eighteen months for experienced researchers. The total duration may be split into as many as three separate visits, with each individual stay lasting at least three months. Once started, the fellowship must be used within thirty six months, extendable to forty eight months in certain cases.

For sponsorship periods longer than six months, fellows may also spend limited time researching outside Germany, up to twenty five percent of the total sponsorship period, if this is necessary for the project.

Host institutions in Germany also benefit. Hosts can apply for a research cost allowance of up to 800 euros per month in the natural sciences, life sciences, and engineering, or 500 euros per month in the humanities and social sciences.

  • Your doctorate must have been completed within the required window for your chosen track, four years for postdocs or twelve years for experienced researchers
  • You must have a publication record commensurate with your career stage, in internationally reviewed journals or with recognised publishers
  • Experienced researcher applicants must hold a leadership role appropriate to their career level
  • You need a confirmed academic host in Germany who provides a detailed statement and confirms that research facilities are available
  • You need two expert reviews, typically from academics at your own institution or elsewhere, ideally including reviewers outside your home country
  • You must demonstrate the necessary language skills for your field, either German or English depending on the discipline
  • You must not have spent more than ninety days in Germany within the eighteen months before your application is received

Application Documents You Will Need:

Every application must include the following before it can be submitted.

  • A curriculum vitae, no longer than two pages
  • A research outline, no longer than five pages, developed together with your intended host
  • A complete list of your publications
  • A list of selected key publications
  • Copies of the key publications themselves
  • Your doctoral certificate, or confirmation that your doctorate will be completed before the relevant selection meeting
  • A German language certificate, if required for your field
  • Two expert reviews, uploaded directly by the reviewers through a protected portal
  • A detailed statement from your host in Germany confirming research facilities are available

Applications that are missing required documents, or that do not follow the Foundation’s formatting specifications, particularly for the publication list, will be formally rejected without further review. It is worth double checking every document carefully before submission, since ambiguities that require the Foundation to contact you for clarification will usually push your application back to the next selection meeting.

2026 Application Deadlines and Selection Rounds:

The Humboldt Foundation now runs three application calls per year, each opening roughly eight months ahead of the corresponding selection meeting.

15 July 2026March 2027May 2027

Each call closes automatically once it reaches the maximum of 800 applications. If you have already started an application when that limit is reached, you can save your progress, but you will not be able to submit until the next call opens.

How the Selection Process Works:

Once submitted, your application goes through several stages.

First, the Foundation carries out a formal eligibility and completeness check, which typically takes four to eight weeks. If anything is missing, you will be notified and given the chance to provide further information.

Next comes the academic review stage, lasting approximately three to six months. Your application is assessed by independent peer reviewers, usually two per application, who evaluate your academic record, the quality of your key publications, the originality of your proposed research, and your future potential as a researcher. Experienced researcher applicants are also assessed on the strength of their independent academic profile.

Finally, a selection committee of sixty to seventy researchers from across all disciplines makes the final decision. The committee meets three times a year, in February or March, June or July, and October or November. Roughly twenty to twenty five percent of applications are approved at each meeting. Both applicants and hosts are informed of the outcome within about five weeks of the decision, and if approved, fellowship documents typically follow around four weeks later.

If your application is unsuccessful, decisions cannot be appealed, but you can request the reasons for rejection by email and submit a revised application later, provided you make meaningful improvements. If your application was rejected unanimously by the committee, you must wait at least eighteen months before reapplying.
