Routledge Round Table Commonwealth Studentship Awards

Applications are now open for the Routledge Round Table Commonwealth Studentship Awards 2026-27. These awards support PhD students who want to conduct research on Commonwealth related themes. Two awards are offered each year, each worth of £5,500 GBP. One award for students registered at UK universities and one award for students registered at universities in other commonwealth countries. Eligibility Criteria:

  • UK Studentship: Open to registered PhD students at UK universities (no need to be a UK citizen).
  • Commonwealth Studentship: Open to registered PhD students at ACU member universities in Commonwealth countries outside the UK. Also open to Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship alumni who are currently PhD students at any Commonwealth university outside the UK.
  • Choose a research topic that relates to the Commonwealth as a whole, has a comparative Commonwealth aspect, or is relevant to more than one Commonwealth country
  • Find and work with a mentor at a university in a different Commonwealth country
  • Applications from humanities and social sciences are welcome.
  • Pure sciences and medicine are not eligible, but research on science and health policies is accepted.

Important Note: Nationality alone does not guarantee eligibility, you must be enrolled in an eligible university.

Mentorship Requirement:

  • All applicants must identify and work with a mentor at a university in a different Commonwealth country from where they are based
  • You are encouraged to contact potential mentors informally before applying.
  • If selected, you must submit a formal letter of support from your mentor.

Mentor’s Role:

  • Hold at least two virtual meetings with the student
  • Provide guidance via email on publishing, events, trends, and new perspectives
  • Contribute to either the final article or podcast
  • Receive an honorarium of £500 GBP

Winners will be announced in September 2026. Successful applicants must submit their article and podcast within twelve months of receiving the award.
