Heinrich Böll Scholarships for Masters and PhD Students in Germany

Applications are now open for the Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarships. These scholarships support international students from DAC countries and other regions who want to study a Master’s degree or PhD in Germany. The program offers financial support for full-time studies at state-recognized universities.

It is a partially funded scholarship that covers a monthly stipend plus additional allowances. There is no application fee. The next deadlines are 1 March and 1 September each year. Eligibility Criteria:

  • International students who completed their previous degree outside Germany.
  • For Master’s: Must apply before starting the Master’s program.

  • Minimum German language proficiency of B2 level or DSH-1.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Clear social commitment and political interest.
  • Priority is given to applicants from DAC countries who have not taken up residence in Germany yet.
  • Refugees can apply regardless of their asylum status.

For Master’s / Graduate Applicants

  • Completed online application form
  • University entrance qualification + first degree certificate (with translation if needed)
  • Transcript of Records
  • Proof of German proficiency (minimum B2 or DSH-1)
  • Certificate of enrollment (can be submitted later, by Stage 3)
  • Social commitment reference (using official form)
  • Expert academic reference (using official form)
  • For refugees: Residence permit information

For PhD Applicants

  • Completed online application form
  • Degree certificate (with translation if needed)
  • Proof of admission to doctoral studies (or supervisor confirmation)
  • Detailed exposé of PhD project (max. 10 pages)
  • Proof of German proficiency (minimum B2 or DSH-1)
  • Social commitment reference (using official form)
  • Two expert academic references (one from main supervisor)
  • For refugees: Residence permit information

All documents must be uploaded as PDFs. Use only the official forms. Personal and expert references must come from different people.
