Applications are now open for the Lee Kong Chian Research Fellowship 2026. This is a fully funded six-month residential research fellowship in Singapore. Selected fellows will conduct research using the rich historical collections of the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and the National Archives of Singapore.
The fellowship is open to both local and international researchers, including curators, historians, academics, and independent scholars. It is especially suitable for those pursuing doctoral, postdoctoral, or advanced research. There is no application fee.

What This Scholarship Offers:
This fellowship provides strong financial and practical support so researchers can focus fully on their work.
Fellows receive a monthly stipend of S$3,500 to cover living expenses, local transportation, and photocopying costs. Overseas fellows also get a one-time relocation allowance of S$1,500, monthly accommodation support of up to S$3,500, and a return economy class air ticket of up to S$1,500.
All fellows enjoy a dedicated research space with a computer and internet, full access to valuable historical collections, and direct guidance from library staff. The fellowship also offers excellent opportunities to present research to the public, publish papers, and build professional networks in Singapore.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Open to curators, historians, academics, and independent researchers
- Doctoral, postdoctoral, and advanced researchers are welcome
- Applicants must have a proven record of achievement in their field
- Research must be based on the collections of the Lee Kong Chian Reference Library and National Archives of Singapore
- Applicants must be ready to live in Singapore for the full six months and spend at least 75 percent of their time at the library

- Critical inquiry on Singapore contemporary literature or theatre from the 1950s
- Comparative study of early Singapore and Malaya from western and Asian perspectives
- Arts and culture in Singapore and Malaya from the early 20th century to independence
- Study of World War II materials using special donor collections
- Social history of pre-independent Singapore
- Architectural history of Singapore
- History of the Straits Settlements (1826 to 1946)
- Cultural heritage of Asia through Asian Children’s Literature
- Study of Chinese community through clan association materials
